The Cartagena City Council takes a decisive step towards urban transformation with its application for FEDER Funds, driving an Integrated Action Plan of nearly €20 million to benefit the neighborhoods of San Antón, Urbanización Mediterráneo, Media Sala, Ciudad Jardín, Barriada Cuatro Santos, Los Barreros, José María de La Puerta, Barrio Peral, and Vereda de San Félix.
Under the Re-Crea Cartagena initiative, this intervention aims to reconnect and revitalize nine strategic neighborhoods, focusing on the rehabilitation of public buildings, the modernization of sports and healthcare infrastructure, and the integration of culture and technology as key drivers of change.
The Alameda de San Antón emerges as a key element in this urban transformation, becoming a sustainable corridor that links the northern Ensanche neighborhoods with the historic center through a design inspired by the principles of the New European Bauhaus: sustainability, beauty, and inclusion.
Through the creation of six superblocks, this project achieves:
✅ Seamless connectivity between El Escudo and Plaza de España, improving mobility and accessibility.
✅ High-quality public spaces, designed for walking, relaxation, and intergenerational interaction.
✅ Comprehensive renaturalization, restoring the iconic avenue of poplar trees that gives the street its name and incorporating permeable pavements to increase urban resilience to climate change.
✅ Elimination of physical barriers, ensuring universal accessibility with safer, more welcoming streets.
✅ Urban infrastructure modernization, featuring efficient lighting, electric vehicle charging stations, and underground waste containers that enhance the cityscape.
✅ Improved road safety, balancing spaces between pedestrians, bicycles, personal mobility vehicles (PMVs), and cars.
A boost for local commerce and the neighborhood economy
This project not only transforms urban space but also strengthens the local economy. The reconfiguration of Alameda de San Antón creates a more attractive environment for local businesses, featuring more accessible streets, comfortable gathering areas, and improved pedestrian flow, benefiting small shops, hospitality businesses, and neighborhood markets. Additionally, revitalized public spaces will serve as venues for pop-up markets, cultural events, and commercial activities, energizing urban life and making Cartagena a more vibrant and competitive city.
With Re-Crea Cartagena, the city moves towards a more sustainable, human-centered, and innovative urban model, aligned with the principles of the New European Bauhaus and the 15-minute city concept. A project that not only enhances the quality of life for its residents but also positions Cartagena as a benchmark for urban transformation in the Mediterranean.
